Zero waste @ Broadgreen

Well as you may have heard, Broadgreen Intermediate has been working really hard towards achieving zero waste from within the classrooms. Each class has had two zero waste monitors to educate students on how we can accomplish this together and it is now time to see if we can do it!

Starting week 6 Term 4 all rubbish bins from around the school will be removed with one left for canteen rubbish being the only one, which will remain. Anything which can be recycled on site will be and will be collected from the school. Waste, which cannot be recycled such as gladwrap, chip packets etc will go back home with the student.

We look forward to doing our part for a cleaner greener school and a cleaner greener community.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AT BROADGREEN

Intermediate education is often viewed as a transitional time for students as they move from primary to secondary education. The two-year time frame is short and students develop physically and socially quickly. Often intermediate is viewed by many parents and students as a time of increasing independence and therefore less direct parental involvement with the school. Below is a list of possible opportunities that I encourage you to consider as ways of participating in the ‘life’ of BroadgreenIntermediateSchool. Your service and contributions are appreciated.

Room 13 has just been on camp. It was a lot better then we expected. We were all packed and ready for rain but to our surprise, the sun shone and the weather was perfect. Absolutely perfect. Camp was full of challenges, abseiling, kayaking, spotlight and the challenge of getting to know your classmates. There was nobody who didn’t learn something. Along with that there is something that must never be overlooked, the food was delicious and there was lots of it! All in all, camp was an exciting experience and an opportunity for our new older teacher to get to know us. A big thank you to Mr J and to the fantastic team of parents who helped.

Tena koutou katoa!

Nau mai, haere mai ki te kura o Broadgreen.

Welcome back to term 4. This marks the final term for half of our school. I encourage all students to remain engaged in their learning and utilise the opportunities in and beyond the classroom that Broadgreen provides. I have enjoyed watching students grow intellectually and socially throughout the year.

Thank you to those families who hosted the visiting students from CHRISTCHURCH SOUTH INTERMEDIATE last term. This was a very successful exchange providing a unique experience for our students to share through performance, sports, games, music, and socially with their visiting peers. We look forward to travelling to Christchurch in 2010.

This term’s virtue is HONESTY. I look forward to sharing ‘morning tea’ with students who exemplify this virtue at the end of the term.

WELCOME to new staff as follows:

Adele ScotsonRoom 15

Jonathan HollandRoom 13

Sue BailliePerforming Arts

Laura JourdainRoom 17

We encourage you to use the SCHOOL AFTER HOURS and weekends i.e. grounds, courts and challenge course. We have a great community facility at Broadgreen and would like families to utilise it for playing games, walking, jogging etc. During the holiday period we had several classrooms broken into; consequently we have reviewed our security in the affected areas. If you see anything suspicious or inappropriate please inform the police.

The NATIONAL EDUCATION MONITORING PROJECT has released its current findings with regards to student achievement. A summary of these results as follows:

READING& SPEAKING

“Most students were able to decode demanding texts quite accurately, with substantial improvement over the last eight years, but there has been no improvement in comprehension…”

MUSIC

“Year 4 students whose home language is not English, Pasifika students and Pakeha students performed similarly. Pasifika students did particularly well on many performance tasks…”

TECHNOLOGY

“Year 8 children presented some very innovative solutions to problems that require them to develop a device or a solution to a practical problem…”

Tena koutou katoa!

Nau mai, haere mai ki te kura o Broadgreen.

Next week we have our traditional exchange with students from CHRISTCHURCH SOUTH INTERMEDIATE. There is a variety of sporting and cultural activities that many students participate in. These include a disco and a debate ie ‘that smacking as a form of parental correction should be a criminal offence’. Thank you to those families who are hosting the visiting students.

The board is consulting with our community through an ANNUAL SURVEY providing guidance for 2010 planning. We have had a return rate of over 25% - thank you. I will share the results with staff, the board and community (next term’s newsletter) once collated and analysed.

The Police have asked me to remind students on bikes to take care at the RAILROAD RESERVE CROSSING. Some students travel too quickly across these making it difficult for motorist to stop in time.

Yesterday I met with some students for a ‘Principal’s morning tea’ to celebrate their selection as students who have exemplified our term’s virtue, SELF DISCIPLINE. I extend my congratulations to these students who consistently model this virtue (student names follow).

There are a number of STAFF CHANGESfor nextterm as follows:

Kelly Diskin (Room 15) has a term’s sabbatical leave. Adele Scotson will teach this class. We wish Kelly well as she explores links between Broadgreen and our Maori community.

Jessica Whinui (Room 13) will be on maternity leave. Jonathon Holland will teach this class. We wish Jessica well as she starts her family.

Jayne Keyes (Performing Arts) is leaving to also have a baby. Sue Baille will teach these classes. We wish Jayne well.

Jason Murray (Room 17) is departing to teach in an international school. Laura Jourdain will teach this class. We wish Jason and his family well in their overseas adventure.

The school community extends its thanks and appreciation for the service and contributiontheseteachers have given to Broadgreen. We wish them well in their respective endeavours.

The term is quickly coming to an end, thank you for supporting your child in their learning and the variety of programmes they are involved in. We wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday break.
